New England Road Trip: A Long Weekend in Newport, RI

New England Road Trip: A Long Weekend in Newport, RI | Organized Mess

Last spring Derek and I took our long awaited road trip to New England. We had originally planned this trip for the spring of 2020 but we all know what happened around then. It was actually our first time to visit New England so it was incredibly hard to narrow down exactly where we wanted to go. We only had one week so we narrowed it down to 2 main cities with a few day trips scattered throughout the trip. Our first stop was beautiful Newport, RI which didn't disappoint at all. I truly fell in love with this little city!

WHAT TO CHECK OUT

Bowen's Wharf | Bowen's Wharf is probably what you stereotypically imagine when you think of a beachside town in New England. A little pier with gift stores and ice cream shops along with a beautiful view of sailboats and the bay. It's definitely worth stopping by!

Cliff Walk | If you do anything in Newport, do this. A 3.5 mile walkway along the shore, most of it is a fairly easy walk (probably about 2/3) and the rest is a little more rough. There are maps along the trail that will show you where you'll have to climb over rocks/natural terrain so that you're prepared to leave the trail if you need to (there are several exit points along the walk). The views of the shore are stunning! You'll also get a great view of the mansions along the coast as well.

Breakers Mansion Tour | If you decide to do the Cliff Walk you can actually access the Breakers Mansion while you're on it which is what we did! A Gilded Age Mansion, The Breakers is a great starting point for mansion tours in Newport. It's self guided with audio and you'll be able to move fairly freely along the mansion while listening to the facts about the home in your headphones.

WHERE TO EAT

Brick Alley Pub | We stopped here for dinner on our first night in Newport and I'm so happy that we did! Brick Alley Pub has been voted the best restaurant and bar in Rhode Island which is a fun fact that I didn't know before we went. I got the lobster reuben which was so good!

The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn | THE VIEW. That's what I have to say about this place. If it's nice out, definitely get a seat outside. The inn is right next to the coast with the restaurant practically sitting on the beach. I got fish tacos and clam chowder, both of which were delicious!

WHERE TO GRAB COFFEE

Picnic Newport | We stumbled upon this adorable cafĂ© during a morning walk and I'm so happy that we did! We grabbed pastries and coffee to go and everything was so delicious. The pastries were perfectly fresh and flaky.

Nitro Bar | A few people had suggested Nitro Bar so we had to check it out! The space was super stylish and the drinks were delicious. I went with a blueberry elderflower espresso tonic which consisted of elderflower tonic and blueberry syrup and topped with espresso.

Liberty Donuts | This was our last stop before leaving Newport and it was a good one. These donuts were made to order and were delicious! I went with a sprinkles option while Derek kept his without.

It's safe to say that I'm already daydreaming of another trip to Newport! A long weekend was enough to see and do a few things but I would love to have some more time just to relax in Newport. There were so many great options for food and the city is just absolutely beautiful. Have you been before? If so, what's your favorite thing about Newport? I'll be sharing where our second stop on our New England Road Trip was next week!
