Summer Road Trip: Fallingwater + Ohiopyle State Park

Summer Road Trip: Fallingwater + Ohiopyle State Park | Organized Mess

Derek and I made the drive to Fallingwater while we're spending a few days in Pittsburgh last summer and wow, was it impressive! I didn't really know what to expect but it was easily one of my favorite parts of our road trip last summer. The house, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, opened to the public in 1964 and with the exception of repairs, has hardly been altered in any way. Walking through the house was essentially like walking through an art museum. There were so many incredible pieces placed throughout the house and the decor was a 50s/60s design dream. You aren't allowed to take any photos inside of the house but I can promise it's worth a visit! One of the things that stuck out to me was how blurred the lines were between indoors/outdoors. Wright used so many natural materials to create the house, plus there are rooms that are so open it's easy to forget your inside for a moment. We also enjoyed walking around the grounds, the house is interesting to look at from every angle and there are even a few hiking trails nearby.

After spending the morning at Fallingwater we headed to Ohiopyle State Park for an afternoon hike before making the drive back to Pittsburgh. We're always up for a hike and a few friends had recommended checking out Ohiopyle while we were in the Pittsburgh area. We took one trail that led us by a large waterfall and then to a river. We made the mistake of not packing a lunch so we ended up heading back to the city sooner than I would've liked too but I'm hoping to make a trip back to go camping here someday!
