What to Wear to the Opera

There are so many fun things to do in and around Philadelphia every single day - you could sign up for a cake decorating class, spend a day at Cape May, go for a picnic by the Schuylkill River, take in the beauty of Longwood Gardens,  eat cupcakes out of jars (because why not?) or you could go to the opera. I know, I know - but what do I wear? When I think about the opera my mind automatically goes to the thought of long gowns, silk or cashmere scarves and tall heels. But it turns out that representation has completely been put into my mind because of movies and novels. It's not that you can't wear those things but you don't have to and you certainly won't be expected to. In fact, you can wear whatever you want to the opera from your leather jacket to your favorite dress! Personally, I love getting dressed up so my item of choice for the opera would be a midi-length sundress, something I can dress up or down. This lace dress from LOFT was the first thing I pulled from my closet when it came time to pick out an outfit for the opera. For an event like this I decided to dress it up with a pair of earrings, a clutch and nude strappy sandals (that are easy to walk in - a plus!).  lace teal dressdate night lace teal dressdate night heeled sandals
These photos were taken inside the stunning Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) in Philadelphia. The building is located in Rittenhouse and every square inch of the interior and exterior is absolutely beautiful. AVA trains young artists to become international opera soloists. Every year, AVA puts on four, sometimes five, fully-staged productions. The shows are complete with a full orchestra and they cast the leading roles to their artists. Starting this Friday, AVA will be putting on the production of Mozart's famous opera - Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) and it will be playing from April 29-May 9 at a few different locations. You can see a list of dates and locations here. Whether you're looking to go on a unique date or looking for a chance to dress up (or not dress up) with your friends or even if you want to enjoy an evening out alone - this is definitely a fun option and you can get your tickets HERE. avawhat to wear to the operawhat to wear to the opera lace teal dresswhat to wear to the operanude clutch lace teal dresslace teal dresslace teal dress

Spring Layers

The last two weeks we've had our fair share of cold spring days. As eager as I am for sunny days and iced coffee, I'll try and savor the remaining chilly days of the season. This particular quiet Sunday morning was well spent in Menagerie with fellow Philly blogger, Audrey from Brunch at Audrey's. We sipped on coffee and chatted for a bit about life and blogging before exploring Old City for a bit. Layers were appreciated on this spring day, especially because I am so over wearing my giant winter coats.
This scalloped pink blazer has been one of my go-to pieces for work the last two months. It's a fun take on an otherwise traditional wear-to-work piece and the best part - I bought it from a local business - Smak Parlour. Philly is blessed with so many adorable local boutiques, especially in Old City so it's always fun to see what you can mix into your wardrobe.  I've found other favorite pieces from local boutiques such as this lace dress and corduroy dress
