we couldn't have picked a more beautiful fall day. I always look forward to our yearly trip to New Hope for an afternoon at Solebury Orchards. As much as I love Philadelphia, it's nice to get away from the city for a bit - especially during the fall. Until COVID-19 took over our lives, I never realized how important my morning runs by the river are or weekend hikes at Wissahickon or a summer day at the shore. So, this year, apple picking seemed even more special than it usually does. I've shopped there for years, they have so many classic, beautiful pieces but this year their pieces seem trendier than ever thanks to the cottagecore trend that's taking over fashion right now. Aspects of cottagecore style have been in trend for a few years like \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.organizedmessblog.com\/2020\/06\/floral-statement-tops.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Epuffy sleeves\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.organizedmessblog.com\/search\/label\/midi%20or%20maxi?max-results=12\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Emidi length skirts and dresses\u003C\/a\u003E but this year the trend has been turned up a notch with midi-length puff-sleeved plaid dresses, \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/shopstyle.it\/l\/bo0qK\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Etops with oversized collars\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/shopstyle.it\/l\/bo0sf\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Eruffles\u003C\/a\u003E. I wonder if it's specific to our new quarantine lifestyle. Maybe it's the desire for simplicity while our lives are quieter than ever. Again, as much as I love living in Philadelphia, sometimes the idea of spending this period of self-isolation sounds a little nicer in a remote cottage, surrounded by flowery fields where I could bake and cook all day and go for long walks in flowery fields. The reality though? I would probably last a month, maybe two, outside of the city. You can pick your own flowers and in-season fruit but there's also a farmers market that sells fresh produce, baked goods, jam, various plants and so much more. We picked a handful of colorful flowers and then went to the farmers market afterwards, picking up some peaches, kale and a jar of strawberry jam and a lavender lemonade slushie and yes, it's as refreshing and tasty as it sounds! There's also various animals around the farm. We saw a horse, donkey and a few chickens roaming the property. It's become a bit of a tradition to go to NYC every February and I always look forward to it, despite the fact that it's usually freezing. Last Valentine's Day we celebrated in Manhattan but this time we decided to make it out to my other favorite borough, \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.organizedmessblog.com\/search\/label\/Brooklyn?max-results=12\"\u003EBrooklyn\u003C\/a\u003E. We started the day in \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.organizedmessblog.com\/2018\/12\/an-afternoon-in-brooklyn-williamsburg.html\"\u003EWilliamsburg\u003C\/a\u003E, took the subway to Gowanus for a dessert date and then walked to the Brooklyn Museum from there. It was quite a busy day but so much fun. The cafe doesn't take reservations but our wait wasn't too long. I loved the rustic, French inspired decor and how cozy and warm it felt on a cold winter day. I got the french omelette with salmon and a mimosa and while Derek went with steak and eggs. Afterwards we stopped by \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.devocion.com\/\"\u003EDevocion Coffee\u003C\/a\u003E for a caffeine pick me up. We also stopped in \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/thevalecollective.com\/\"\u003EThe Vale Collective\u003C\/a\u003E, which was another trendy boutique with fun pieces as well as the jewelry store, \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.catbirdnyc.com\/\"\u003ECatbird\u003C\/a\u003E. Our last stop in Williamsburg was \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.spoonbillbooks.com\/\"\u003ESpoonbill Books\u003C\/a\u003E, which is a favorite of mine. We weren't planning on spending a lot of time there, our main destination was a pie shop, but I definitely want to go back sometime in the near future. I'm so happy I decided to wear \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/shopstyle.it\/l\/bfcWU\"\u003Esneakers\u003C\/a\u003E on this day, we ended up walking over 10 miles and these shoes are super comfortable. We went to the actual cafe in Gowanus despite the fact that there's a standing counter cafe super close to the Brooklyn Museum. I wanted to be able to relax with a cup of coffee and a slice of pie, which is exactly what we did. I got the lavender and honey pie and it was SO good. It's actually the third largest museum in NYC and it holds more than 1.5 million pieces of art. I was shocked! To be honest, I didn't know much about it before we went and I definitely wasn't expecting it to be as large as it was. An hour and a half was not early enough time to see everything but I'm happy we got to spend some time there.
